Teaching
In August 2022, I was appointed Applied Adjunct Faculty in Classical Bass at George Mason University. As a faculty member at the Sid and Reva Dewberry Family School of Music, I’m proud to helpĀ guide our students to find their best musical voices!
If you are interested in finding out more about studying classical double bass at GMU, drop me an email at jpowel23@gmu.edu. You can sign up for a trial lesson, register for a Shadow Day to experience a day in the life of a GMU music student, or attend an event at the Dewberry Family School of Music and see what our outstanding students are up to!
I also offer private and group lessons in piano, cello, double bass, and viola da gamba. For information on rates, studio policies, etc., please visitĀ Chevy Chase Music Lessons.
I am active as a clinician and as a private instructor. With the help of outreach grants from Early Music America, the Viola da Gamba Society of America and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, I have developed and implemented school workshops in New York, Maryland, and Virginia on early music/dance and early music/improvisation for general music classes, and on baroque performance practice, for middle school and high school orchestras.
From 2013 to 2016, I directed the VdGSA Young Players Workshop, an annual retreat for college-aged viola da gamba enthusiasts, and I have served as a workshop coach for the Viola da Gamba Society of Greater Washington-Baltimore.
